Inflammation is a natural defensive mechanism of the body. However, uncontrolled inflammation is detrimental. Chronic inflammation can lead to visible skin ageing as well as other diseases. Elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 and tumour necrosis factor-α are reported in aged individuals, which may lead to muscle atrophy and even cancer. Thus, the anti-inflammatory efficacy of LactoSporin® was assessed by percentage inhibition of lipopolysaccharide induced secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokine, TNF-α, by a human monocyte/macrophage cell line (THP-1).

LactoSporin® tested at various concentrations showed a dose-dependent anti-inflammation activity.
This suggests the potentiality of LactoSporin® against the skin inflammation induced by pro-inflammatory environmental insults such as pollutants, UV radiation as well as allergens.
